Fans of electronic-rock veterans Depeche Mode will be excited to hear that the band is currently in Santa Barbara, California, working on a new album.
Still unnamed, the album is the follow-up to the band’s 2001 release, "Exciter." It is set for release sometime in the fall of this year and will be distributed internationally via Mute, and by Reprise/Warner Bros. in North America. Ben Hiller, a producer known for his work with groups including Blur, Elbow and the Doves, is co-producing the record.
"It's a great feeling to be back together in the studio again and we are very excited about the new material," said singer Dave Gahan.
"We're all feeling incredibly positive about the album. Ben Hillier has brought a whole new dynamic to the group which is quite inspiring."
"Exciter" debuted at No. 2 on the European Top 100 Albums chart, while first single "Dream On" was an instant No. 1 in Germany and Italy.
In the U.S., it opened at No. 8 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 421,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
“Remixes 81-04,†a compilation of alternate versions of the group’s better known hits was released by Mute and sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. One of the tracks from the record, a remix of "Enjoy the Silence" by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda hit No. 1 in Spain and Denmark and reached the top 10 in Germany and the United Kingdom.
Depeche Mode is best known as the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. They were one of the first groups to create music using nothing but synthesizers, beginning as a dance-pop group that developed a sound that was much more dark and dramatic. To this day they are regarded as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.
